I M Public

One more incidence of a woman been mistreated, now yet another opportunity for the media to have debates over women security, how the government and police are not competent to set things right. It even sets the stage for all our intellectuals to give their perspective on women liberation, conservative and chauvinist men etc. It even becomes a breeding ground to all self-defence programs for women and increasing sales of pepper sprays etc.

The focus is completely on the person who has got abused and the person who has abused.

In any given society we would always have few people who are mentally sick and are beyond correction. It was shocking to know that the accused in the Bangalore incidence did this act because it was a Dare given.  If these men can step on a woman’s dignity to satisfy their adrenaline rush of winning a dare, we all can imagine what mind-set these people come from. All these defective characters can’t be corrected nor be eliminated. They would continue to be an integral part of our society.

In the same society we shall even have women who are subdued by nature; they would be the last ones to raise their voice or stand for their rights. It may happen because of their upbringing, culture, their own experience in life or been subdued is an integral part of their DNA. While the progressed and educated society always expects the entire female fraternity to be strong and standing for their rights, few of them just can’t make it to the progressed society’s expectation of been strong.

Now, in a society where morons (beyond correction) and subdued women prevail together, the million dollar question remains what is to be done. The police force is always there to support and protect but the fact of the matter is we just can’t have one policeman per woman. Again we come back to the million dollar question, what can be done.

Morons and Subdued women together in the same society, how do we avoid any mistreatment towards women?

The larger problem I observed while viewing the Bangalore incidence clipping was there were 2-3 guys who got captured at the end of the street and they didn’t do anything about it. I was aghast the way they just were bystanders while the morons were misbehaving.

Our country is known for its tolerance towards many things however the 3 – 4 guys, who got captured as by-standers in the video, were they really tolerant or were they cowards. Under the garb of showing tolerance are we really becoming cowards? Have we developed multiple reasons for hiding our fear? I still keep wondering that these by-standers didn’t even feel like giving a loud shout which could have saved the situation a bit.

This takes me back to my childhood days.

I stayed in Dadar for more than 30 years, rather a Dadar born. I lived in one of the most crowded areas, as my house was stone-throw away from Dadar Station. Due to been densely populated it was a heaven for pick pocketers, chain snatchers etc. One of the greatest childhood entertainments for me was standing in the window of my 3rd floor house and peeping out of the window to some chaos happening on the road. The chaos would typically be that a person was caught snatching a chain or robbing something. The robber is running ahead and public is running behind him to beat him. Eventually, the robbers developed a repulsion towards robbing not because they became ethically sane but because they got scared that if they are caught robbing PUBLIC BAHUT MAREGI (Public will beat them crazily).

PUBLIC, a gathering of stranger that do not have any name, identity or face. They are all individuals who are just trying to reach at some personal destination, but the moment they hear a cry for help all these individuals suddenly come together and become public and come to the rescue of the aggrieved person.  The robbers of my childhood days minimized their robbing activities because they were scared of getting caught and beaten up by the public.

Today, as a father of a school going kid I keep wondering where this PUBLIC has disappeared and even if Public still exist why are these jerks no more scared. Has the erstwhile Public now taken up the role of a by-stander? Why are these morons not scared of public anymore? Have they taken the power of public for granted? Has public forgotten its power of togetherness? Or we really don’t want to be a part of public as the women of my house and known circle hasn’t got impacted yet.

I am a middle-aged not so physically fit man. I am not a celebrity or a rich man. I don’t know any form of martial art or self-defence technique. I don’t even have a licensed pistol or know how of any other weapon usage. But guess what, I have the intent and the courage to be a part of the public who will scare the shit out of the morons who would try to abuse any woman.

As the dialogue of Sholay says, Yahan se pachas pachas kos door gaon mein ... jab bachcha raat ko rota hai, toh maa kehti hai bete soo ja ... soo ja nahi toh Gabbar Singh aa jayega. In the same way all morons should get scared thinking better behave nahi toh Public aa jayega.

I want to be a part of Public which will make a moron think twice before committing any crime against women, if you wanna be a part of the public who can keep the morons at bay, join public.

  3. Hi Sachin, women safety is the critical issue which our Indian law has failed to address. Reading today on 4 years girl rape has really disturbed me. My heart cried for that girl and her parents too. We can only stop this with the help of law which will hang these culprits in public so that no one dares such act. The law need to be modified with severe punishments. We as a citizen should also be alert and come together to fight and save the girl if any incident is taking place. Your article is giving us the strength to come united and pushes us to help needy.

    Good one!

  5. Very well written Sachin.

In my view, the reason that there is increase in such incidents is because our law in the matter is not only corrupt but does not punish the offender's adequately. We know of the famous Nirbhaya case which was indeed a henious crime but even after 4 years, to the best of my knowledge, the victims are yet to.be hanged. One of the offender's was not even an adult as per the norms in place & was sent to the juvenile court/home. If the so called juvenile could do such a crime, wander why should he be treated as a juvenile any more?

On the by standers piece I suppose it is largely because we ourselves are not impacted hence we don't bother and also because we don't know what weapon the offender may be carrying? We have heard/read of cases wherein minor skirmishes of road rage have led to shooting incidents leading to death.

To conclude, thw law has to become stronger & justice rolled out fast to have an effect.

    1. Thank you Sir for your sharing your thoughts. Agreed that the law needs a major change and there is no scare of the law in these perpetual offenders. Not sure how to go ahead with this herculean task but I guess if all contribute their own wisdom towards this cause I am sure things can change.

  6. I echo each word that you have written Sachin! I so much wish our laws were strong as these words and it ensured the right punishment to these offenders.. The fear of the public remains today, as they are held responsible and required to give statements over statements and the offenders by means of no strict action walk out free..

Really hope the action speaks stronger than the words, which will bring a scare to the spine for such offenders to even think about such an act.

By all means I am one among the Public and ensure will not stand as a bystander for any wrong happening around me and will ensure that I pass on the values of Respecting Human Being with whom I am connected with.

  7. Captivating thoughts Sachin, we all need to be part of this PUBLIC.
Primarily after the Nirbhaya case the focus has shifted to women safety. It will with likes of you Sachin that with examples and sharing your voice...That maybe we can transform into a vigilant PUBLIC in few years....Not just for women safety but everything else which can go wrong.
Wishing all of us to become such a role model to our future generations.
May the moronics get beaten up and highlighted for Justice by PUBLIC

  8. Hi! Sachin! Indeed, your thoughts have indeed strengthened my view of our societial decay in terms of reducing Spiritual Quotient thereby depleting the larger masses who do not have (strangely lost) the courage to speak out or save the victim. However, with due respect to your article, I do believe that the same is an extension of what is happening all around in our lives as when some of the so called learned fraternity decides to be "politically silent" when they they know that an innocent bystander(irrespective of gender) is being trampled upon very conveniently in the name of stepping on the "Corporate Ladder" and the so called "intelligent" ones chose to be silent, we need to think hard, that whether these "intelligent" ones would have the courage to be different or daring enough to raise their views and not just criticize the "wierd ones". I completely agree to join the movement with a pun to ensure that each one of us also begins a "Change in our Sphere of Lives" as someone wiser said much earlier " True Character is what one does when he/she knows no one is Watching You." .....and Most Importantly " We need to be the Change that we Wish to see....",Thanks
    Sachin!

  9. Hi Girish...thank you for sharing your perspective. I completely agree that at times we end up using our so called intelligence not to get this done but use it for creating logics as to why it shouldn't be done. We need to be different and daring to raise our views and opinions in the most honest way.

  10. Very well expressed Sachin. Yes, I want to be a part of a responsible public. Yes, the laws need to be more robust. But bystanders should still take the right action for whatever is happening in front of my eyes.
